TWO HEROES TO CELEBRATE IN MARCH

TWO HEROES TO CELEBRATE IN MARCH

Okay, In the month of  March we can (and should, actually) celebrate two heroes of the past who've improved our social profile today.  We can use them as models to help us devise ways to bequeath a better world for our kids and grandkids.

St. Patrick's Day (March 17 every year) commemorates one of the two social heroes. According to history, Saint Patrick was born English in the fifth century, was then captured as a boy, enslaved, and "exported" to Ireland, As a slave, he tended sheep. He escaped, became a Christian, then returned to Ireland on a Christian mission. He converted the Irish.

What a life, what a hero.

A second hero to celebrate in March: William Wilberforce, English, 1759 to 1833. He became a religious reformer, coupling evangelical religious reform an anti-slavery ethics--a perfect combination of a foundation for one's life today. In his day, he successfully championed the cause of creating a freeing Africans from slavery, leading to creating a colony of freed slaves in Sierra Leone, West Africa.

Today, we can honor these great heroes by making their values our own: a religious foundation coupled with education and working for social improvement.
