IDEAS FOR A GREEN THANKSGIVING
IDEAS FOR A GREEN THANKSGIVING
First Green idea: the core of Thanksgiving is that it’s a day of remembrance, fellowship, friendship. (Conflict is a theme too: T-day football = conflict on the field. Pilgrims celebrated with Indians but also stole their land. Contrary human traits, always with us. Green suggests giving fellowship and friendship stronger weight.)
Second idea: you’ll probably assemble with others for a meal. Make it Inclusive: family and/or friends if possible. Menu: plenty of ideas on the internet. Turkey is traditional but not essential. Dining together is green; gorging isn’t green.
Third idea: 0n T-day, recall your history. When did your earliest ancestors arrive in your land? In my wife’s family’s case: Mayflower passengers Eliz. Tilley and John Howland (John was washed overboard, rescued). Gratitude for ancestors from wherever, whenever, make us stronger links in the chain.
Teach: respect and friendship. Kids and adults need reminders too.
Green Thanksgiving: the gifts we receive actually strengthen our ability to gift to others.
I wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving.
